The '''alt.sex.bondage''' [[Newsgroup|Usenet newsgroup]] (created ca. 1989) was the first publicly visible [[BDSM]] resource on the [[Internet]].  As well as those interested in sexual [[bondage]], people interested in [[alternate sexuality]] were drawn to it, among them those interested in what is now considered BDSM.

Discussions in the group popularised many components of today's BDSM subculture, including the abbreviation "BDSM" and maxims such as [[Ugol's Law]] and [[YKIOK,IJNMK]].  The term "[[Total Power Exchange]]" was first coined during [http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=7o79tu%24t23%241%40links.magenta.com debates] on alt.sex.bondage and the abbreviation [[TPE]] was born there.

alt.sex.bondage was gradually overrun by spam adverts, and discussion moved to [[GoogleGroups:uk.people.bdsm|uk.people.bdsm]] and 
[[GoogleGroups:soc.subculture.bondage-bdsm|soc.subculture.bondage-bdsm]]. Most online BDSM discussion is now on various [[Discussion_boards|discussion boards and mailing lists]].
