A cane in terms of physical punishment has come to mean any flexible yet stiff rod of any material, usable for striking a person. It may be made from any suitable material including reed, rattan, cane (e.g. sugar cane) and nylon. Bamboo is NOT a good material because of its tendency to splinter and to transmit disease easily.
