Coming out or in full coming out of the closet is the act of revealing publicly that you are homosexual. The word closet reflects the fact that before male homosexuality was legalised, those who hid their activities were known as closet homosexuals or closet queens.
The phrase can also be used for other acts of revelation, for example revealing that you are a fetishist or BDSM enthusiast.
