Coming out or in full coming out of the closet is the act of revealing publicly that you are homosexual. The word closet reflects the fact that before male homosexuality was legalised, those who hid their activities were known as closet homosexuals or closet queens.
The phrase can be used to mean revealing that you are for example a fetishist or BDSM enthusiast.
