Penis in flacid state (left) and erect (right)

Erection is the hardening, enlarging and rising of the penis which often occurs in the sexually aroused male, but can occur in entirely non-sexual situations as well. Erection enables sexual intercourse and some other sexual activities, though it is not essential for all of them.

Prevention or removal of a male erection is common in BDSM play; it may be achieved by chastity devices or by various forms of orgasm control such as deflation.

The clitoris of females also contains erectile tissue and may become erect during sexual arousal; the erection of nipples, however, is pureky due to engorgement by blood and there is no erectile tissue there.
