Personally, I’ve always loved wearing leather clothing and accessories of all sorts.  The first leather purchase that I recall took place around 1982 when I was 15.  My parents forbid me to purchase any spiked gear, however that certainly wasn’t going to stop me from acquiring what I wanted.  I managed to save my allowance and purchase a small spiked wristband at Thingz.  This store was located at the Universal Mall in Warren, Michigan.  While long defunct, it predated places such as Hot Topics by about 20 years.

In later years, I bought or received as gifts a casual leather jacket, an officer’s cap, boots, dog collars, wallets, miscellaneous belts/straps and a pseudo leather jock strap.  Incidentally, I own a collector’s edition of Motorhead songs on record.  The discs are encased in a leather sleave.  Lemmy and the boys always did have good taste! J  Financial limitations have prevented me from purchasing a more extensive leather wardrobe, but such is life.

Over the years, I’ve attended several fetish shows in the area clad in my various black gear. I don’t claim to be extraordinarily sexy, but my leather wardrobe certainly gives me a leg up when it comes to personal appearance.

Leather fetishists at Pedestal.

Leather fetishism is the name popularly used to describe a fetishistic attraction to people wearing leather, or in certain cases, to the garments themselves.

One reason why leather may become a fetish object may be that the garment forms a "second skin" that acts as a fetishistic surrogate for the wearer's own skin. This is heightened by the fact that the leather was originally animal skin. The smell of the leather and the creaking noises it makes are often erotic stimuli for people with this fetish.

Leather can also be polished to be shiny and can also be produced in bright colours, causing further visual stimuli to add to the physical sensations produced by the material.

Leather enthusiasts often fantasize about trades where leather clothing is commonly worn. In particular, some leather fetishists fantasize about cowboys or bikers and their leather clothing.

The feel of tight leather garments may also be viewed as a kind of sexual bondage, and much SM equipment is made out of leather. This led to the term "leather culture" being applied in the 1960s to describe a particular American sadomasochistic subculture. The human pony fetish often involves elaborate leather harnesses.
