Postulant is a term sometimes used for a candidate applying for a position with a Master or Mistress. This is an initial grading and may be upgraded at a later date to a Novitiate.

The progress between grades is determined by the Master or Mistress and may involve the applicant in having to undergo a series of trials to prove their worth and their sincerity.

The ranks and orders of progression involved are based on those historically applicable to people who wished to devote their entire lives to the pursuit of religious knowledge and service.
