A sou'wester is a waterproof hat with a wide piece at the back to protect the neck, worn especially by sailors. It is popular with rainwear fetishists. The name refers to the south-west wind, which in Britain often brings rain.
They come in many colours, but the commonest is yellow.
In American English, a sou'wester coat is a matching waterproof coat.
