Starkers, or stark naked, is an expression for full nudity.

Starkers! is also the name of a no clothes-night club in London.

Word history

Stark naked, recorded in English since 1530, stems from Medieval English start naked (c.1225), from Old English steort "tail, rump." Hence British slang starkers "naked" (1923). The change from "start" to "stark" was influenced by the word stark (harsh, plain, bare).

Starkers! is unique in that it is the only disco in England where everyone is naked. Entrants must remove all articles of clothing (except footwear - which is required) upon entering and remain naked until leaving. Women are allowed to wear a bikini bottom, but most choose to be naked anyway. Men must be completely naked. The disco is strict and universal in applying its undress code, extending it to all disco staff, including the coat checker, DJ and bartenders.

Starkers! has its own bar, dance floor, DJ, and chill-out area. The nightclub is open to both men and women of all ages and of any sexual orientation. Cameras and mobile phones are prohibited due to the concerns many patrons have of nude photos of themselves becoming available on the internet.

Starkers! was a finalist for Club of the Year 2006 in the Erotic Awards.
