It was a reality of life in the Victorian period (especially in the English-speaking countries) that images of fully naked women could only be displayed in public view under several fairly strict conditions, such as that the subject matter must depict a mythological, allegorical, remote historical, or exotic (pseudo-"oriental") theme, and also that no pubic hair could be shown. Displays which violated these conditions were considered highly inappropriate for children, women, and youths, and if too publicly prominent could attract negative attention or incur government action...
