[edit] "Japanese method of abbreviation combining the first two syllables of each word"
Technically it combines the first two moras of the Japanese borrowed form of each word (in "pokemon", the "mon" part contains two moras according to Japanese phonology, but not two syllables). Not sure the article has to go into this in detail, though...
