Original meaning

In the 19th century (as an adjective), "out" meant a teenage girl of the middle or upper classes who was considered old enough to attend grownup social events (and so eligible to be married). The 20th-century gay meaning refers to being "out of the closet"... 21:47, 14 March 2014 (GMT)
