A little bit of slip showing was kind of the 1950 equivalent of Victorian admiration for a woman's well-turned ankle -- something which was not at all revealing of the body, and rather innocuous-seeming in itself, but which some males enjoyed nevertheless.
Also, women would commonly tell each other "I think your slip is showing" in the same way that men would tell each other "Your fly is undone"... AnonMoos 13:30, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
