I've added this template as I've found a number of pages have taken content from wikipedia without citing it as the source. Although all text on wikipedia is available under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, that license requires that attribution (credit) is given wherever it appears. This template provides that in an easy way. --VampWillow 11:22, 14 Jun 2005 (BST)

: Should this template also include mention of the GFDL? I know Wipipedia:About already states that the whole site was under GFDL, but from Wikipedia's section on copyrights I got the impression that sites using Wikipedia material were supposed to indicate GFDL on every page. (Wikipedia acknowledges GFDL in the footer of every page, this site does not.) But IP law makes my head spin, and I could well be mistaken. --Calair 07:50, 21 February 2006 (GMT)

:::Look at the Wikipedia page: Wikipeida:Forks and mirrors. You will find that one of the standards used for "full compliance" for sites that reuse wikipedia content is a local link to the GFDL on every such page, and another is a link back to the wikipedia article being used. Really it would be better if we put "content released under the GFDL unless otherwise noted" or soemthing of the sort in the footer of thsi site, IMO -- ther is pleanty of room. [edit] Necessity

[edit] Discussion

Should this template also include mention of the GFDL? I know Wipipedia:About already states that the whole site was under GFDL, but from Wikipedia's section on copyrights I got the impression that sites using Wikipedia material were supposed to indicate GFDL on every page. (Wikipedia acknowledges GFDL in the footer of every page, this site does not.) But IP law makes my head spin, and I could well be mistaken. --Calair 07:50, 21 February 2006 (GMT)
It is my impression that the GFDL need not be mentioned specifically. (Last time I was involved in a discussion on Wikipedia, it was revealed that the GFDL does not entirely cover every page, anyway!) I don't think sites which reproduce the Wikipedia entirely bother mentioning the GFDL on every page but if they do, then perhaps we should look into it.
Look at the Wikipedia page: Wikipeida:Forks and mirrors. Wikipedia's license, the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) requires that any derivative of works from Wikipedia must be released under that same license, must state that it is released under that license, and reproduce a complete copy of the license in all copies of the work, and must acknowledge the main authors (which some claim can be accomplished with a link back to that article on Wikipedia).... The license does not apply to material in the public domain or that is used under fair use.

I'm considerng reforting the template to look like this:

Smallwikipedialogo.png This page uses content from Wikipedia. The original article was at Wikipedia. The list of authors can be seen in the page history. As with wipipedia.org, the text of Wikipedia is available under the GNU Free Documentation License.
