interwiki Table

I'm not sure what the contents of this db table are, of course. Have you seen the SQL script at cvs.sourceforge.net ?

It would be helpful to have a list on a topic (under Help: ?) for those who want to refer to other wikis at any point.

I have registered the Wipipedia as a link with Wikipedia and it should become active within a week or so.

--Interesdom 20:52, 18 May 2005 (BST)

I had a look at the database and we have this data already loaded. I need to spend some time and work out how to use it! Balzac 22:57, 19 May 2005 (BST)

It's this table, as far as I'm aware, that allows us to put in wikimedia code such as :

  • [[Dictionary:fetish|Definition of Fetish]]
  • [[GoogleGroups:soc.culture.bondage|soc.culture.bondage]]
  • [[Wikipedia:servant|servant]]

Which produces:

(btw lets put this in the Help file before deleting it!)

What I'd like is for such inter-wiki links to open in another (single) window. If we can do that it would be very helpful as I think there's lots of times we should be linking (back) into wikipedia. --Interesdom 23:46, 19 May 2005 (BST)

Interesdom locked out

Interesdom asks me to pass on the message that he can not get access to the site because he changed his skin to something that gives a blank page even on preferences and can you please change his skin back to something that works but not the black one because he can't see that very well.

Thank you Sir.

Thanks

It seems I was not the only one trying to see which skins made things more legible! Many thanks for re-setting me and I'm pleased to say I'm now back in under my "real" name. I'll use user-css to change the colours a little instead! Re your question, I'd be happy to help out and bring the experience I have to, uh, help whipi things into shape ;-P --VampWillow 16:17, 20 Jun 2005 (BST)

Body belt

Hi there. Would you mind if I used your picture of a body belt in the Wikipedia "bondage belt" article (it'd be tagged as GFDL with a link back to you here at Wipipedia)?. —Ghakko 14:12, 16 Jul 2005 (BST)

I am very happy for you to use it. Balzac 22:33, 16 Jul 2005 (BST)

On Wikipeida there is a template {{Wipipedia|pagename}} for standard acknowledgement of information taken from here. Instructions for its use are at Wikipedia:Template_talk:Wipipedia. --Interesdom 23:12, 16 Jul 2005 (BST)

Thank you very much! —Ghakko 08:30, 17 Jul 2005 (BST)

Interwiki redirects

I'm finding these very confusing as a reader and as an editor/author here. As a reader, I suddenly find myself off on a totally different site, unexepcted and without an obvious way back (I would normally open any other site in a new browser window. It is hard for an editor to get to such a redirect page to change the redirect or to put text there instead. Could I suggest that instead of redirects we simply have text along the lines of "See {{Wikipedia:somepage|Wikipedia}} for an article on this subject". --Interesdom 19:37, 15 Aug 2005 (BST)

What I am trying to do is to provide links to articles that fall outside of the BDSM subject matter but are refereed to in artciles imported from the wikipedia. Since the Wipi and the wiki both use the same interface (OK different colours) I felt that it was a good way of expanding topics that are on the boundary of what would be suitable for the wipipedia. I agree that it might be a little supprising to the reader when it first happens but I think that they would quickly get used to it. I do think though, that it might be better if I inbed the wikipedia link into the article (so it appears in blue) rathter than creat a redirect. Balzac 19:51, 15 Aug 2005 (BST)

I have used the "veiw the Wikipedia artcile" on some topics but where the link is already inbedded in the artcle I felt it would not ready well.

Images on gags

What kind of licence are they under? (I'm looking for good pictures for wikipedia) Henna 10:02, 21 Aug 2005 (BST)

All the gag shots (and any other shots of equipment on the same background) were taken by me and are published under the GNU Free Documentation License, so feel free to use them. Balzac 11:30, 21 Aug 2005 (BST)

thank you very much, is there a general policy here concerning images or would it be best to ask everybody seperatly if their images are under a suitable licence? (couldn't find an equivalent to the wikipedia Village Pump) Henna 12:15, 21 Aug 2005 (BST)

ok, I've been having a more thorough lookaround now if I understand correctly, the following images are under gfdl:

Henna: On Wikipeida there is a template {{Wipipedia|pagename}} for standard acknowledgement of information taken from here. Instructions for its use are at Template_talk:Wipipedia. --Interesdom 14:44, 21 Aug 2005 (BST)

Balzac: I have recently added the templates {{GFDL}} and {{FAL}}. I'm not sure if the GFDL is really needed as all Wipipedia is covered by it but it is there in case you want it (unless you prefer the Free Art Licence). --Interesdom 14:44, 21 Aug 2005 (BST)

The NOs I have copied off on-line stores and given a credit and link so I don't think there will be any problem. Topto Bottom leathers (the isolation hood) have said I can use any of their images Balzac 20:45, 21 Aug 2005 (BST)

hi

This wipipedia is cool. :)

I've posted a message on Talk:Main Page/Wipipedia talk:Community Portal if you're interested

I would like to help out any way I can

I notice from Special:Recentchanges that it's pretty inactive at the moment, it's a pity - maybe you need more publicity

One thing it definitely needs is more community/social side so that people actually can collaborate on articles instead of just occasional more random changes. A list of who admins are and stuff would be good too, like on Wikipedia (I am Wikipedia:User:Mistress Selina Kyle) --Mistress Selina Kyle 13:41, 24 December 2005 (GMT)

I was wondering, what does it take to become a sysop/bureaucrat around here? I would very much like to help out.
I just reverted what seems to be a long string of vandalism on Current events by automatically-created spambot accounts, see http://www.lfshosting.co.uk/wipi/index.php?title=Current_events&action=history - Not sure if much can be done about this, have you blocked the IPs yet? --Mistress Selina Kyle 15:34, 24 December 2005 (GMT)

Hello again

Ok, you might want to see [[Category:Users that are possible candidates for blocking]] for a list of some vandalisers (same thing, porn/viagra spammers on current events) that seems haven't been blocked yet. :)

Did you see my message on Talk:Main Page? Are you responsible for hosting the site and maintenance etc or only an admin of the wiki itself?

It'd be cool if you could set up Commons: to go to named links on Wikimedia Commons in the same way Wikipedia: does, also the shorthand w: and c: possible?

One immediate bug I notice at the moment: My talk page is never marking itself as unread like it should - No matter how many times I look at my talk message I still have a big glaring orange "You have new messages" bar near the top of my screen. Weird. --Mistress Selina Kyle 20:50, 25 December 2005 (GMT)

Hey there,

Thanks Balzac for the kind welcome. I also wanted to thank you for coding and categorizing the articles I wrote. --Vicious Lover 22:05:57, 2005-12-25 (GMT)

I had a question. Why not utilize the private message feature of php with this website? Also, there are several blocks which can make the site more of a community, such as "who is where", "last logins" etc. Is there a reason why this site doesn't use these free and easily installable features of php?

Just curious. Thanks! --Vicious Lover 17:07:32, 2005-12-27 (GMT)

My PHP knowledge is fairly utilitarian, I assume to use these features I would need to patch the metawiki software. The only problem I see is that if there is a new version of Metawiki released then there could be issues with trasnfering them t the new version. Balzac 22:35, 27 December 2005 (GMT)

I don't believe that would be the case, as you are running php, and wiki would be a module of php, not vice versa. It's sort of like running Word on your computer, and also Outlook Express at the same time. Two different programs running off of the same pc. Same thing with wiki and different modules running on php. I'd check it out, it might be worth your while to do so. --Vicious Lover 22:19:22, 2005-12-28 (GMT)

Using copyright material from Wikipedia

Please see my comments on Talk:Polyamory re. using material from Wikipedia without acknowledgement. Thanks - --Calair 23:54, 18 February 2006 (GMT)

I'm flattered

I'm pleased to see that some material I contributed to Wikipedia was deemed worthy of inclusion here, such as Box tie, ball tie and Savage fold. In some cases, I've amended the articles since you copied them. Would you like me to copy over the latest versions, and some that you haven't copied? Are things like schoolgirl fetish and uniform fetish within your scope? Please e-mail me, as I don't know when I'll be looking at my user page. Taxwoman 23:40, 18 May 2006 (BST)

I'm enjoying it here. Can I apply to be an admin please. --Taxwoman 00:53, 29 May 2006 (BST)
Thanks ever so! --Taxwoman 22:30, 4 June 2006 (BST)

Use of images

I am confused by these new rules about the use of certain images. I understand that we need permission to use the images from the original owner. However, I do have some problems about using hardcore images. Seeing as this is an adult website, I thought that the use of hardcore images would be exceptable. After all, there are hardcore images all over the internet, and some of those will be from British websites. Also, what exact laws would we be breaking if a hardcore image was being used? What exactly qualifies as being hardcore in the first place? Would the picture of a naked person be considered hardcore, or a naked person being bound, physically punished, masturbating or using a dildo be hardcore? ISD 13:54, 12 July 2006 (BST)

It is an adult website but we do need to be careful about obscenity laws. The London Fetish Scene who technically owns the wipipedia is operated through a limited company (although not for profit) a number of us are directors of the company and hence could be procescuted if the police decided what we were publishing broke any laws. We also do this as a hobby not a job an none of us want the publicity of a police investigation, it may be a little paranoid nut that doesn't mean they are not out to get us! We do need to be careful about any image showing any sex act or genitalia. I don't think there is any problem if the article is obviously informative but a lot of the images that lataxgirl has been posting is straight porn.
I think there is also a question mark over if the articles being posted are legitimet content for the site, this is an encyclopedia not a pornagraphic image library. We do not have umlimited storage and bandwidth if people wanted to download images there are plenty of other sites to cater for them. In terms of what constitutes hardcore and softcore I agree this is a grey area and we will have to take a view on a case by case basis. Balzac 14:57, 12 July 2006 (BST)

Is it possible to export images from Wikipedia into Wipipedia? ISD 14:41, 13 July 2006 (BST)

Quite a few images on the wipi are from the wikipedia. In general there are no copyright issues about using them and no obscenity issues either. I just to a save as on the wikipedia and then import the image into the wipipedia. Balzac 15:11, 13 July 2006 (BST)

Colour schemes

I've had the following query from new User:Bt. Can you help please?

"It does not seem that the version of Mediawiki you're using supports alternate colors on the screen. Since some of the color choices are very difficult for me to read in combination (odd contrasts are the chief problem, I think), I've an interest in making adjustments. Are these possible in some way I've not seen?"--Taxwoman 00:05, 25 July 2006 (BST)

He can try using a different skin (from preferences) One of these days I will setup a better front page that displays corrrectly with the standard wikipedia default page Balzac 00:28, 25 July 2006 (BST)

All has been made clear. The options available under preferences were invisible due to the lack of contrast on the default skin. Problem resolved. Bt 18:56, 26 July 2006 (BST)

Interwiki

The interwiki entry we have on MediaWiki (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Interwiki_map) isn't working anymore. It points to http://www.lfshosting.co.uk/wipi/index.php/$1 (the $1 being the replacement code for the article name) which seems to always land on the main page now. Could we fix the link as a matter of urgency, or we'll have people removing all the links from Wipipedia to here. We can also change the link on MediaWiki, Meatball etc. but from past experience, that can take several weeks to take effect - let me know if you want me to handle that side. --Interesdom 11:30, 25 July 2006 (BST)

If you could sort it that would be very helpful Balzac 11:37, 25 July 2006 (BST)

Admin offer

It would be nice to be an admin, but I'm not sure that I could honestly tell you that I'll have a sustained long-term interest in editing here -- when I first came across this site, I saw that there were a number of things here that I could improve relatively easily, but since my interests tend to be somewhat specific, that will probably diminish with time... AnonMoos 19:24, 20 September 2006 (BST)

Thanks.... AnonMoos 18:45, 26 September 2006 (BST)

Problem with low-contrast text

On page Bondage bed, the link text of the link to "JT's Stockroom" is displayed in light blue on very light gray in the apparent default skin, and so is very difficult to read (in fact almost invisible in my browser). AnonMoos 18:45, 26 September 2006 (BST)

I have been thinking of changing it for some time. I'll have a look at doing it now!!! Balzac 19:52, 26 September 2006 (BST)

Main page

I wanted to correct "Its simple" and "add you suggestions" on the main page, but it complained about the spam filter(?), and wouldn't let me do it... AnonMoos 16:21, 30 September 2006 (BST)

The system has a flag to prevent < div string being saved, th emost common form of wiki spam uses them to imbed web address to get picked up by google spiders. Unfortunatly the formatting of the main page also uses them. If I want to changethe page I need to first turn them off, make the chnage, and then turn them back on again. The result being that I am the only person that tcan edit the main page. I'll make the corrections 08:50, 1 October 2006 (BST)

Copyright status and stuff

Just saw your edit summary saying "Forniphilic gag by Robert Bishop. Believed to be fair use of image as artist is deceased" Just thought you should know the Berne(sp?) convention on copyright means that copyright only expires 75 years after the dead of the author. Also it's my understanding that there is no "fair use" within UK copyright law, I believe that's an american concept that doesn't apply here, although I could be wrong on that. Astaroth 20:32, 10 October 2006 (BST)

You may be right there, I have looked around and his work is used quite alot on other sites so I am assuming that no one will object to its use here. I would be much more careful with more recent stuff. I want to use a Gord image I have in my collection. In this case I'll email them first before I put it up just in case they object. BDSM equipment suppliers

Hi,

Is there a reason you removed my contribution to suppliers?

OK I understand. Is there a criteria for uniqueness? I'm wondering at what point would my work pass the test? OK, I guess you won't answer this but I would like to know if you are able to answer.

GFDL Images

Thanks a lot for providing all this great GFDL-content! It is really a great help for my work on the German Wikipedia, since we have a very strict policy against copyrighted images and no legal base for "fair use". Any single image is highly appreciated and helps to further widen the perspective on BDSM on the German project. Kind Regards. Nemissimo 12:27, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

New extended version on Wikipedia

Hi Balzac, the German featured article BDSM has been translated into Englisch and is now avaible on Wikipedia.

I believe specialized BDSM wikis like wipipedia and the German http://en.smiki.org/Main_Page are really important to build strong independent projects, supporting the community with decent information on all aspects of the lifestyle. Thanks for all your efforts.

At the moment the new version is under strong discussion on its talk page and altough I was able to add more than 70 references even more sources are asked for by the copy editors in order to continue. To be quite frank I#m running out of English language sources and hope you or others reading this are able to supply some.

There are two main fields which need to be sourced more detailed:

It is tough as well, do you know any sources compiling the prejustices?

I general... you and other experts are highly welcome to take part in the discussion, please spread the word. ;-)

Kind Regards from the alps. Nemissimo 11:05, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

Stories policy

While I recognise your greater status in setting policy here, I think that as an active admin, I am at least owed an explanation for you removing text I put in to protect individuals and LFS. --Interesdom 19:18, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Oops, sorry, that was a complete mistake on my part. I had planned just to remove the dead links to the story you had deleted, I must have removed to extra text by mistake.. I think your text is a very senible policy and I will revert the text. Balzac 19:35, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
I've just checked and actually it was LinD who removed the text, not me (phew, off the hook on that one :-)) Balzac 19:40, 9 January 2008 (UTC)
Oh, yes, sorry. We could all do without behaviour of his current kind. I suggest if we have any more trouble, we simply ban him. This cannot become a site for people's personal feelings to overrun themselves. --Interesdom 20:09, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

Simplfied GFDL tempates

Toy do realize, to be GFDL complaint those templates that you are simple MUST explicitly state they are GFDL right? --Roguebfl (talk) 09:48, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Adding the GFDL licence to every instance of the template makes it messy. I feel that we follow the spirit of the licence and as far as I can see we follow the letter as well. We state on the front page if the Wipipedia that everything published here is under the GFDL licence which I think covers us. Finally, I don't think that anyone is likely to sue anyone over this sort of thing. If an author thas a complant we will of course try to address it, or remove the text. Balzac 10:49, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
Actually you're not following the letter at all in this case, that is actually the biggest complaint against GFDL (and which is why a lot of people prefer Creative Commeons) is that the a copy of the license must me given with EVERY usage. So if you give some a printed out copy of an page you must also give them a copy of the 3-4 page license document (see VERBATIM COPYING ) --Roguebfl (talk) 19:03, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
I am not sure looking at the BMZine what licence if any the wiki is published under. Balzac 10:52, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

We have a few photos where the license is "Permission to use on Wipipedia", which means that people cannot copy them. That is inconsistent with GFDL. Ropeuser 13:16, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

True, but I I don't think anyone will complain if there is the odd inconsistancy. Balzac 14:18, 28 November 2008 (UTC)
Made {{Permission}} for this case --Roguebfl (talk) 17:09, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

<Gallery> colours

The default skin needs to either chance .gallery or .gallerytext away from White , as it it right now they are both white, hence hiding the text. --Roguebfl (talk) 19:05, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

I was wondering when somebody would spot that deliberate mistake!!! Text should work in galleries now. Balzac 20:49, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
I'm afraid not, see School roleplay --Roguebfl (talk) 20:53, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
Works for me (the text in the gallery box). Did you click refresh to reload the style sheet? You may be using the old version cached in your browser. Balzac 22:40, 11 December 2008 (UTC)
I did. I assumed when it started working shortly after that you had continued working on it. as it now works --Roguebfl (talk) 23:34, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

While we are talking about it, can i make a suggestion? We are currently using

How about instead having:
