A woodshed treatment means a very severe physical punishment such as a flogging.

The original significance of the term was that to administer this punishment, a father would take his son to the bottom of the garden, behind the woodshed, out of sight and to some extent out of the hearing of female members of the family who might be distressed.

Similar phrases are:

  • take to the woodshed meaning to reprimand or punish
  • trip to the woodshed meaning an instance of being reprimanded or punished.
