A thumbnail of a picture is a very scaled-down copy of it, that may be used to help to find a picture or organise a collection of them. Often, a thumbnail is used as an icon and by clicking on it you get to the larger version.

Its literal meaning is of course the nail on the thumb; the term comes from "thumbnail sketch" meaning a very brief description.
