Depending on the wearer, they might not be quite safe in respect of chastity, as it sometimes is possible to get the genitals out of them without access to the key.

Special "metal-detector safe" models also exist; these are made entirely of plastic and fasten with tamper-evident plastic seals. This type mostly isn't called a chastitybelt, but a chastitytube.

  • A "Florentine"-style belt (named after the Bellifortis reference) has a band around the waist or hips, with a "shield" running between the legs to cover the genitals. These are the 'real' chastity belts. They exist both for men and women. A survey of the website Chastity.UK revealed that only a minority of ca. 15% of the chastity devices now sold are of the Florentine type, presumable because they are more expensive.

For Florentine belts, the design must accommodate a long-term wearer's needs to pass both urine and feces:

  • For females, the shield is commonly a flat band with a slot through which the labia can protrude and through which urine can pass. (Some manufacturers fit a perforated cover—sometimes called the "secondary shield"—over this slot to both to prevent the wearer from being pinched when sitting and also to prevent masturbation.)
  • For males, the shield usually covers a tube in which the penis is held facing downward with perforations at the bottom of the shield to allow urine to escape; the testicles are exposed on both sides of the tube. In most cases the tube is straight, which makes erections still possible. One beltmaker in Belgium (http://users.pandora.be/carrara/carrara/carrara/concept%20belts.htm) therefore has developed an extra high-security model called Carrara with a protector that covers all the genitals, that might be one of the most safe existing in respect of chastity, as the penistube in this case as an exeption is curved, immediately punishing the wearer for getting an erection, as this will be rather painfull.
  • Belts with a "thong" arrangement have a single strap running up between the buttocks to the waistband. On some, this is a plastic-coated cable or a thin curved metal rod; on others, it is a steel strap with an aperture in an O-vorm over the anus to allow passage of feces.
  • Belts with a "V"-arrangement have a pair of chains attached together the bottom of the shield and apart towards the back of waistband in a "V" to leave the rear open.

Most modern chastity belts are fastened with padlocks. Some high-security designs nest the lock within a shroud to make it more difficult to attack with bolt cutters. Some of the more expensive designs have locks that are integrated into the belt.

Modern chastity devices of both cage and Florentine types are often designed to also work with genital piercings for greater security.


Why wear a chastity belt?

  • Allthough apparently some women wear a chastitybelt to prevent rape, most are worn in a consensual relationship, not allways of a BDSM-caracter, to give the keyholder total controll over the sexual behaviour of the wearer and prevent infidelity and (in the case of men perhaps even more often) masturbation.
  • A lot of chastitydevices are only used during sexual play, for which long-term-wearing-comfort isn't necessary. Hygene, urination an defecation have not to be taken into account. The material of the chastity-device therefore can be leather too.
  • The investigation of Chastity.UK revealed that most wearers were usually locked up just for a week, which will mean that the belt is only used for temporary orgasm denial to have better sex afterwards. More than 50% did never wear the belt for more than a month; onethird of the respondents were secured for more than two months, which means that they are not locked up to enhance the pleasure of a soon sexual play for the wearer too, but were kept in real chastity for a serious period, which for a small minority ranged till over a year.

Choosing a chastity belt

  • Modern chastity belts are mostly designed for long-term, continuous wear. However, before investing in a chastity belt, it is usually advisable to clarify one's budget and goals, then balance them against the potential physical and mental discomfort.
  • "Florentine"-style waist belts can be incompatible with vigorous sporting activity because they make bending forwards or sideways at the hips difficult. For comfort and absolute chastity they have to fit well, and therefore have to be made exactly to measure, which makes them rather expensive.
  • The choice of materials used in the belt is also important: some plastics, alloys (especially those containing nickel), and rubber (such as that used in neoprene) may cause allergic contact dermatitis after constant contact with the skin.   • Weight gain or a protruding belly may make the fitting of a "Florentine"-style belt difficult, or render an existing belt uncomfortable for constant wear. For long-term wear, a curved belt that hugs above the hip bone and drops below the belly in the front is much to be preferred to a waist belt that encloses the narrowest part of the waist, as this last model, when sitting will push rather painfully against the ribs.
  • Badly designed or adjusted devices can compress male genitals in a potentially harmful manner.
  • Devices made entirely of plastic, as well as plastic single-use verifiable closures, are available for wearers who must travel through airports or other places where metal detectors are used.

Purchasing a chastity belt

  • All 'real' chastity belts of the Florentine type for men and women prevent genital intercourse, sometimes anal intercourse too. A good high-security-belt for men will, to guarantee the absolute chastity of he wearer, also make erection, stimulation, masturnation and above all orgasm impossible.
  • Most manufacturers offer belts with a curved waistband that surrounds the hips instead of the waist. These hip belts offer more comfort and flexibility to the wearer and are the overwhelming choice of modern buyers over traditional waist belts.
  • When the wearer is supposed to be secured in the belt for longer periods, so to say 'to live' in the belt in public, it is important to look for a belt that doesn't show under clothes. Especially one has to pay attention that the locks don't make bubbles at 'strange' places.
  • For a custom made stainless steel belt to fit comfortably, accurate measurements of the wearer's body must be taken. Steel belts are very expensive to modify. As measuring has to be very exact, it is absolutely advisable to visit the beltmaker in person to have him do the necessary measurements, as it is rather difficult to do that yourself in an adequate way. Getting used to wearing a chastity belt

  • In a way a new belt-wearer has to 'learn' to wear a chastity belt, especially when he/she is supposed to become locked up for longer periods in a 'real' chastity belt, i.e,. of the Florentine type. Male wearers will have to train themselves quickly to avoid spontanuous erections, as they are rather painfull in curved tubes and, if happening often, may do harm to the skin of the penis.
  • Furtheron the wearer might need to look for other carriages for defecation and urination. Belted men off course will have to urinate in a sitting position too and to do that very slowly to avoid a mess.
  • After the belt is delivered und locked on for the first time, it must be bent by hand for fit and comfort. Thereupon a period is usually also required for the wearer and the belt simple to adjust to each other; the better - i.e. safer and thus stronger - the belt is, the more time this will take. Especially high-security chastitybelts, meant for serious long-term-wear, are rather heavy und thus heavy to wear in the beginning both physically and psychically, as the wearer will be aware of them the whole time.
  • For all those reasons, usually it will take one month or longer for them until a new belt is felt in both ways as a 'normal' part of the body and thus can be worn continuously for permanent.
  • The wearer therefore should wear the new belt just for 1-2 hours on the first day, then gradually lengthen the amount of time spent in the belt. As the belt has to be applied very tight to the body of the wearer like a second skin of steel to make selfstimulation or even escape absolutely impossible, and thus to guarantee his/her absolute chastity, the wearer especially has to get used to the uninterrupted and unescapable very firm grip of the belt at the hips, the genitals and the perineum, which, when the belt is locked in place the first time, after half an hour may seem unbearable.
  • For that reason a belt that can be adjusted to weight gain is advisable, as this makes it possible to apply the belt each time a little tighter, till it fits as it should (to exclude any possibility that the wearer may free him/herself by pushing the waistbands of the belt over the hips), which would seem much to narrow in the beginning.

Wearing a chastity belt: hygiene

  • The wearer should check regularly for bruising, edema and chafing where the device contacts their skin. Chastity belt wearers should be vigilant against pressure sores, because when the belt is applied well, it is nearly impossible to move it a little for relief of the pressure.
  • During periods of long term wear, the belt should be removed regularly to clean off accumulated skin, urine, and other deposits, mostly once a week. Apart from that, the wearer should clean the genital and anal parts of the belt each day with help of the strong spouts of a shower. Some beltmakers state that by doing that securely, their belts can be worn uninterrupted for a month or even longer without any hygienic problem. Care should be taken to clean parts of the belt that are in constant contact with the body.
  • For belts with a "thong" arrangement, access to a bidet can greatly simplify hygiene. The belt must also drain well enough to prevent water and bodily fluids from being trapped against the skin. Skin trapped with water without any time to "breathe" can lead to chafing or rashes. A hairdryer may be helpful for drying difficult-to-reach areas of skin after bathing.

A chastity belt is a locking item of clothing that prevents the wearer from engaging in sexual intercourse and (sometimes) masturbation as well. Versions exist for both male and female.

Chastity belts are sometimes used as an element of consensual BDSM practices. There tend to be two types — a lockable "belt" which is worn around the pelvis, or (for males) a "cage" type device which locks around the genitals. Male chastity belts prevent stimulation and erection to the genitals as well as orgasm. Both belts and cages include models which can be worn for some weeks, and some are made from strong plastics which are intended to be 'metal detector safe'.

Medically, modern chastity belts can be worn long term, however they require careful fitting and adjustment, and if maladjusted can rub or (especially 'cage' types) compress the genitals of males in a very uncomfortable or potentially harmful manner. For this reason, it is important to test them carefully for wearability before relying upon them, and regularly thereafter check for signs of physical injury (bruising, odema, rubbing and chaffing, etc). In addition, when buying a belt, some designs of belt may be more suitable than others (particularly for well-endowed men), depending on physical size, body shape, and reason for buying.
